Hospital Infection Raises the Risk of Death for Bowel Patients

On April 22, a new study found that hospitalized patients having Bowel Disease known as IBD; if get infected with Clostridium Difficle bacteria will have six times more risk of death due to that Bacterial Infection.

IBD is composed of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. When the IDB patients have severe symptoms, they have to get hospitalized for treatment.

The researchers of Imperial College London and at St. George Health Care Trust in United Kingdom have studied the data on IDB patients hospitalized between 2002 and 2008 and they found that the patients who get infected with the C. difficile have 6 times more chance of dying in the hospital due to this disease as compare to the patients who are not infected with this type of Bacteria.

The death rate of IDB patients infected with the C. difficile was 25% in 30 days while the death rate of other IDB patients not infected with C. difficle is 3%.

Surgery Should Be the Last Option for Obesity in Children

Obesity has now days become one of the major problems in the children, the reasons for this could be different but the major one no doubt is the junk food that is the hot favorite of all children. Different surgical treatments have been very common nowadays for the obesity and many parents think that these treatments are best for their children. Recently a review of studies on the obesity has been performed by different Britain and US scientists and it has been suggested that diet change and more exercise should have to be the first option in treating the obese children and getting surgical treatment and drugs usage should be avoided as much as possible.

Sue Kimm of the University of New Mexico, Debbie Lawlor of Britain’s Bristol University and Joan Han of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, wrote in The Lancet journal “The risks of bariatric surgery are substantial, and long-term safety and effectiveness in children remain largely unknown”. Many studies have been performed on the pros and cons of surgeries for obesity but the results could be different for a child that’s why doctors suggest avoiding this mode of treatment for the children.  The experts said that prevention, especially in young children is the best way of controlling the obesity rates along the globe.
